Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy (Proliferative Therapy), also known as Non-Surgical Ligament and Tendon Reconstruction and Regenerative Joint Injection, is a recognized orthopedic procedure that stimulates the body’s healing processes to strengthen and repair injured and painful joints and connective tissue. Anesthetic is part of the procedure and most patients are surprised how tolerable the injections actually are for them. Side effects are extremely rare.  I have over 21 years of experience with this procedure and was the first to introduce prolotherapy along with enhancing platelet rich plasma, amniotic fluid  and stem cell therapies to the Southern Indiana and Kentucky region of the country.  I am happy to be bringing  this experience back to my original home in upstate New York/Berkshire region where I raised my children.

The most conditions treated are:

  • Low back, sacral and mid-back injuries and chronic pain syndromes

  • Neck pain and whip-lash

  • Rotator cuff tears and shoulder pain

  • Chronic Achilles tendonitis and minor tears

  • Knee pain and Degenerative/Arthritic changes also patellar

  • Chronic/Acute elbow ( epicondylitis, golfers elbow and tennis elbow) and ankle injuries

  • Hip pain/degeneration and injuries

  • Wrist pain and injuries

  • Chronic Groin injuries

  • TMJ

Prolotherapy is based on the fact that when ligaments or tendons (connective tissue) are stretched or torn, the joint they are holding destabilizes and can becomes damaged and painful. Prolotherapy, with its unique ability to directly address the cause of the instability, can repair the weakened sites and produce new collagen tissue, resulting in permanent stabilization of the joint. Prolotherapy also reduces inflammation. The main active ingredient is hypertonic sterile glucose (extremely safe)  modified according to the patient.  Once the joint is stabilized and inflammation is reduced pain usually resolves. In many instances prolotherapy may replace surgery which has more risk and may fail to stabilize the joint and relieve pain. It can be a better option then  anti-inflammatories or other pain relievers which only act temporarily and do not heal most conditions. While prolotherapy can replace all of these procedures all of the time it often can.

I have been teaching and practicing prolotherapy , PRP as well using cell products  for over 21 years now. I am happy to offer traditional prolotherapy, PRP and some stem cell/amniotic therapies. We are considering to restart prolo-zone as well.  When needed I have guided ultrasound in my office to pinpoint injections when needed.

I have found prolotherapy to be of tremendous benefit to my patients as well as myself. Most chronic conditions and partial tears respond very well to series of 4-8 injections. Prolotherapy is a true regenerative process which occurs through repeated cycles of collagen growth and regulation of the inflammatory cascades. This improves strength and elasticity of the injured region resulting in flexibility and loss of pain. Improving diet , exercise, stress as well as providing the right targeted nutrients can further improve healing and overall results. My prolotherapy career began when a talented physician injected my chronic Achilles tendonitis brought on by years of sports and rock climbing. I had failed many orthopedic interventions and had resolved myself to a more sedentary life. Since my treatment this condition has never returned and I have treated my knees with prolotherapy and PRP allowing more flexibility and reduction of pain. I have treated over 1,000 patients with this technique and the success rate is extremely high. Having taught prolotherapy and trained extensively with many  experts in the field I can promise my patients the benefit of extensive experience and skill with no hype. An initial consult is about ½ hour. Please bring any X-rays, MRI’s, CT-Myelograms or reports to your visit. Typical procedures last 30-60 minutes.

As an Osteopathic physician I can also support treatments with Osteopathic Manual Manipulation and Cranial Sacral Therapies. We also refer to physical therapy and massage which can be of extensive benefit during the rehabilitation process.
